Lantern Ensemble is a calligraphy water lantern painting experience in virtual reality.
Minimal and realistic calligraphy experience
Persistent on a virtual lake
In a routine evening running around Greenlake Seattle, Jude was deeply touched by a water lantern ceremony orgnaized by a local group "From Hiroshima to Hope". The annual tradition since 1984 offers the hope to resolve conflicts without violence, and learn the habit and technique of living in peace.
In Seattle's 2018 annual VR hackathon, Jude pitched and gathered a group of talented developers and artists. In two days, the team completed a fully functionall VR app that delivered the minimalist
beauty and a realistic calligraphy experience. The app won the "Best in Show".
Following the Hackathon, Doug, Andrew and Jude have been showing Lantern VR around Seattle and continuously fine tune the user experience. The team decided to name it Lantern Ensemble to reflect the collective
art making spirit.
After a solid build in November, Lantern Ensemble has a event play version ready for installation in event locations suitable for art museums and galleries. Each location will have its own virtual lake, the lanterns created by the participants will accumulate and float around, lighting up the space
